What is the difference between buying from a BYB or a Pet Shop, and buying from a Registered Breeder who holds an Experimental Licence? A Registered breeder will know the ancestry of your kitten, both of its parents have a Certified Pedigree setting out its breeding, the breeder knows which cats cannot be mated together . Backyard breeders buy undesexed pet quality kittens and mate them together, most of the time they do not know or care if their cats are closely related or if they may be carrying genetic problems. This can cause major problems in terms of temperament and long term health, but if you think the BYB will stand behind the kitten they took your money for, think again, they have no reputation to preserve and are not breeding to further the breed, you do not have a leg to stand on! The photos below demonstrate that the uneducated carrying out of matings with cats whose ancestry is unknown can produce kittens which look nothing like the named breed. When you pay for a pedigree kitten you should be getting a product of a breeding program that looks and behaves consistantly like its named breed. . | Sadly many pet owners are misled into thinking that their much loved new pet is actually a pedigree kitten either though not doing the research on their breed or being misled by disreputable breeders. The kitten pictured above left was advertised in a 2005 Melbourne Trading Post as a Burmilla. This kitten looks nothing like what we know as a Burmilla, yet some poor unsuspecting person will buy one thinking it is the genuine article. The kittens father (above right) is clearly some kind of cross breed, and in fact the owner admitted that she had bought the male as a pet from a person in NSW who was crossing Ragdolls with Chinchillas, as she had been unable to buy an undesexed Burmilla Long Hair to use in her unregistered breeding. Burmillas in Australia do not have blue eyes, tabby points, blazes on their faces or tortoiseshell markings, This BYB was quite OK about offering this kitten for breeding, but where would a pet owner source a Burmilla stud male from to mate this little girl to? And imagine what the kittens might come out looking like! Registered Burmilla breeders studs are closed to any but other registered Burmilla breeders. This person was approached about becoming a Registered breeder, but declined. I wonder why? The price of the kittens? $350.00 - $400.00 each might sound like a bargain, a lot less than the $600.00 a Registered breeder might charge, but taking into consideration that the registered breeders kitten will come with vaccinations up to date after 12 weeks, desexed and microchipped, and comes with a guarantee. Registered breeders have to pay full breeding/show price for our breeding cats, registration and membership fees, mating fees, show entries and for good veterinary and healthcare. By the time you have desexed the little BYBred kitten, vaccinated at 12 and again at 16 weeks and microchipped you will have paid the same amount, and maybe more if the kitten has been unwell. A Registered breeder of pedigree Burmillas is able to show a current membership card for their Registering Body or their membership can be confirmed by ringing the Registering Body they say are a member of. |
| Why buy your new kitten from registered breeder? Purebred kittens are like designer handbags. Sounds crazy but it's true. We all know that there is the authentic designer bag then there are the cheap knock offs. The real designer bags are hand crafted, made with care and attention to detail. They are good quality and you know you are getting what you pay for, the real thing! Cheap knock offs are slapped together in sweatshops from substandard materials. They appear similar to the real thing but look closely and it is clear they are just an imitation. Sadly they often dont "quite right" or last as long as the real deal because they are not well made. It is the same with registered purebred kittens. A kitten from a registered breeder comes with a pedigree that proves it is the breed they say it is. Unregistered breeders just breed cats that look like the real thing. The only difference between kittens and designers bags (aside from the fur!) is that kittens from registered breeders don't cost more. In some cases they cost less especially when they have vaccinations, microchipping and desexing included in the price. Registered breeders follow the standards set by their asociations and breed for love not money. So buyer beware. Dont make the mistake of buying your kitten from an unregistered breeder. Why have a knock off when you can have the real thing?" |
